ANNAPURNA BASE CAMP TREKKING
This is a very accessible trek leading you from the beautiful lush green terraces of the Pokhara valley, through some really charming village communities up to Poon Hill which offers exceptional views of the Kali Ghandaki Gorge and Dhaulagiri, you will drop into the pretty valleys home to many Gurung villages before climbing up to one of the most dramatic 360 panoramas around. The Base Camp, also known as the Annapurna Sanctuary is a moderate level trek meaning it is fairly strenuous, a relative level of fitness is required. The tea house accommodation is of a relatively high standard. Each day is well planned allowing sufficient acclimatization and a chance for you to enjoy the dramatic scenery as it unfolds.
ITINERARY:
DAY 1
KATHMANDU ARRIVAL (1300M)
Welcome to Kathmandu, the capital. You will be met on arrival and transferred to your hotel; here you will be formally introduced to your Guide and the activities to be enjoyed over the next few days. We will also ask for your passport photographs and any other details required for your trek permits, at this stage.
DAY 2
KATHMANDU SIGHTSEEING
After breakfast, you will start an interesting tour around Kathmandu. We will arrange a guide of your chosen language to give you a tour and introduction to our rich culture amongst our ancient and fascinating history and religion. In our sightseeing tour you go to Monkey temple Swayambhunath, Pashupatinath and Kathmandu Durbar square. Durbar Square: This complex of palaces, courtyards and temples, built between the 12th and 18th centuries, used to be the seat of the ancient Malla kings of Kathmandu. There is an intriguing 17th century stone inscription set into the wall of the palace with writings in 15 languages. The Durbar square, protected as an UNESCO world Heritage site, is the social, religious and urban focal point of the city. There are also museums inside the palace building. There is an entrance fee of Rs.250 for foreign visitors. Your ticket to the Square entitles you to visit all the museums. Swayambhunath, situated on a hillock 6.5 KM west of Kathmandu, this 2000 years old Stupa is the world’s most glorious Buddhist shrine and is surrounded by several small pagodas. The main temple is capped by a pinnacle of copper gilt and is painted on the four sides with all seeing eyes of Lord Buddha. Pashupatinath, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is the holiest and most famous Nepalese temple. Situated 5 KM northeast of Kathmandu on the bank of the sacred Bagmati River, it is an impressive pagoda style structure with gilt roof and richly carved silver doors. It has bathing and cremation ghats, which are of absorbing interest to the tourist, particularly in the mornings and on festival days.
DAY 3
KATHMANDU TO POKHARA (960m / 6hrs or ½ hr)
Drive or fly to Pokhara. Pokhara is situated on the side of Lake Fewa, it is a beautiful area with Fishtail mountain (Machhapuchhare) rising not far behind within the Annapurna range. Only 200 KM from Kathmandu it can take 6/8 hours by road depending on the season.
DAY 4
POKHARA | BIRETHANTI (Trek to Ulleri drive 2 hrs and trek 4 hrs 2070 M)
You will begin with a 90 minute drive to Nayapul where you will begin you walk through the lush, green Modi river valley, past waterfalls with plunge pools that invite you to swim. You will soon begin your ascent where you will be introduced to the lovely stone paths and stair cases immaculately cared for by the local people. After 4 hours of walking you will reach Ulleri where you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the valley below and the peaks of Annapurna South and Hiunchuli.
DAY 5
ULLERI | GHOREPANI (2850 M / 4 to 5 hrs)
A gentle climb through pasture and cultivated fields. As the trail climbs higher, you walk up beside the cascading river through refreshingly cool oak and rhododendron forest to Ghorepani.
DAY 6
GHOREPANI | POON HILL | TADAPANI (2660 M / 6 hrs)
Wake up early this morning and climb up to Poon hill from where can see from Dhaulagiri range to Ganesh Himal range. During the Sun rise panoramic views with colourful mountains. A stunning start to your day followed by breakfast back at your hotel. From here you have a short climb through rhododendron forests to another good view point and on to Deurali before descending to the river and up the other side to Tadapani where again you will be well rewarded with stunning views of Fishtail the ideal spot to watch the sunset.
DAY 7
TADAPANI | CHHOMRUNG (2030 M / 5hrs)
The trail drops down from Tadapani, through dense rhododendron forest to Ghandruk and Komrong which present lovely views of the upper Modi valley. The route starts the long ascent high above the west bank of the Modi Khola, and continues up to the village of Chhomrung. Towering above the village is the mighty peak of Annapurna South, with the Fishtail facing it across the valley.
DAY 8
CHHOMRONG | HIMALAYAN HOTEL (2920 M / 7hrs)
We walk through the pretty forest to Kuldi Ghar, before the route goes steeply down a bank of rock and then levels out, running through riverside bamboo thickets along the base of the gorge. Then the track winds steeply up through deep bamboo and rhododendron forest to the village of Doban.
DAY 9
HIMALAYA | MACHHAPUCHERE BASE CAMP (3720 M / 4hrs)
The track remains on the West Bank of the Modi, now flowing through a more open valley, and eventually emerges into the Sanctuary. Straight-ahead is the high lateral moraine of the South Annapurna glacier and the Modi follows a deep cliff to the right. This is the site of Machhapuchhre base camp from which can be seen a spectacular panorama of mountains. We will either stay here or continue northwest, staying above the glacial moraine.
DAY 10
MACHHAPUCHERE | ANNAPURNA BASE CAMP (4130 M / 3hrs)
The route begins on a broad grassy path, before climbing over lateral moraine and down to the beautiful ablation valley. We soon reach the British Expedition Annapurna South Face Base Camp (4234m.) The best views are probably obtained from the crest of the moraine, which we follow until it is cut through by the glacier flowing down from Himal Chuli to the north
DAY 11
ANNAPURNA BASE CAMP | BAMBOO (2300 M / 7hrs)
This morning you must wake early to watch the sunrise over Annapurna I and South, the sight is breathtaking. After breakfast you will start to descend down the Modi river to Bamboo
DAY 12
BAMBOO | JHINUWA OR HOT SPRING (1400 M / 6hrs)
The trail passes the small village of Khuldi Gar, before continuing through rhododendron and bamboo fields to the Alpine-style village of Chhomrong. Stony steps climb steeply to Kabre Chautara and soon after we turn off towards Landrung, leaving the Ghandrung path dropping away you will spend te night at Jhinuwa home to some lovely hot springs.
DAY 13
JHINUWA | POTHANA (1900 M / 7hrs)
After an easy descent to the river you then have a steep climb to the Gurung village of Landrung, the trail mostly traverses to Pothana from here from where you will hopefully see the entire range.
DAY 14
POTHANA | POKHARA (2 hrs walk & 1 hrs drive)
It’s a short trek down to Phedi via Dhampus village with good views of mountains, where we meet the road and drive back to Pokhara with private transport.
DAY 15
POKHARA | KATHMANDU (drive or fly - 1300 M / 6 hrs or ½ hr)
After breakfast in the morning you say goodbye to Pokhara and head back to bustling Kathmandu by car or private bus (There is an option to fly). In the afternoon free day of your own. Overnight in Hotel.
DAY 16
KATHMANDU
This is the free day and you can use it for your shopping. In the evening you will drive you for farewell dinner with cultural dance.
DAY 17
DEPARTURE
All too soon it's time to bid Nepal farewell and one realizes that we can never be intimate, only acquainted with this amazing country.
